How KCAI works

Four steps, and a person checks every result

KCAI narrows thousands of possible comparisons down to a short list worth a human looking at. It does not decide that two animals are the same.

Submit a report

Tell us whether the pet is lost or found, and give the basic details.

Add photographs

Clear photographs and identifying marks make a comparison far more useful.

KCAI compares records

Appearance, location, dates and description are compared against compatible reports.

Possible matches surface

Anything promising is reviewed by a person before anyone is contacted.

Searching and matching

What the system actually compares

A match is built from several independent signals rather than a single one. When a photograph is unclear, the other signals still carry weight; when a description is sparse, KCAI does not pretend to more certainty than the evidence supports.

  • Appearance — species, breed impression, colours, markings, size, coat
  • Photographs — visual similarity between submitted images
  • Location — how far apart the two reports are
  • Timeline — whether the dates make sense together
  • Written detail — collars, injuries, behaviour and other identifying notes

Status labels you will see

LOST FOUND POSSIBLE MATCH REUNITED UNDER REVIEW PRIVATE

Every label carries text and a symbol as well as colour, so it stays readable in greyscale, in high-contrast mode, and for anyone who does not distinguish these colours.

Privacy and trust

What we protect, and what we promise

Your contact details stay private

Name, phone number, email address and exact address are never shown on a public listing. A public report shows the pet, a general area and a date.

Matches are suggestions

KCAI surfaces possibilities. It does not confirm identity, and a possible match is never treated as proof that two animals are the same.

A person reviews before contact

Nothing reaches you automatically because software scored two reports highly. Human review stays part of the process.

You choose what is public

Public display, AI matching, sharing with shelters and social sharing are separate choices. Agreeing to one does not agree to the others.

Private data is encrypted

Contact details and exact locations are encrypted where they are stored, and access is restricted and recorded.

You can withdraw

A report can be removed from public display or withdrawn entirely. Permission to show something is not permanent.

Our relationship

A separate platform, powered by KC Pet Search & Rescue

KC AI Pet Match is operated as its own platform. KC Pet Search & Rescue — a Kansas City metro pet-recovery organisation — powers it and provides the recovery expertise behind it.

If your situation needs hands-on recovery help rather than a matching service, KC Pet Search & Rescue can be reached directly.

What KCAI is not

  • Not a government agency
  • Not a law-enforcement system
  • Not an official municipal database
  • Not a replacement for contacting your local shelter or animal control

If you have found an injured animal, or an animal in immediate danger, contact local animal control or a veterinarian first.

Shelters and rescues

Built to work with shelters — not yet connected to them

KCAI is designed so a shelter or rescue can share its intake records and check them against lost-pet reports. That capability is being built and no organisation is connected yet.

No shelter integrations are active. No shelter or rescue currently sends data to KCAI, and no shelter listings appear on this site. We will not describe an organisation as participating until it has agreed in writing.

Permission first

No organisation’s records are ingested without its written authorisation.

Vendor neutral

Designed to accept records by several methods rather than requiring one specific software vendor.

You keep control

A partner decides what is shared, what stays private, and can stop sharing at any time.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does KCAI guarantee it will find my pet?
No. KCAI improves the chance that a lost report and a found report are noticed together, but it cannot guarantee a match or a reunion. Many pets are found through neighbours, shelters and local searching, and you should keep doing all of those.
Will my phone number or address be shown publicly?
No. Contact details and exact addresses are never displayed on a public report. A public listing shows the pet’s description, a general area, a date and any photographs you approved for display.
How accurate is the photograph comparison?
Photograph comparison measures whether two images look alike. It does not identify an individual animal the way a microchip does, and two similar-looking pets of the same breed and colour can score highly. That is exactly why a person reviews results.
What if I do not know the breed?
That is fine and very common. Give your best impression and describe what you can see — colours, size, coat, markings, a collar. Photographs matter more than naming a breed correctly.
Can I remove my report later?
Yes. You can take a report off public display or withdraw it entirely.
Is this the same as KC Pet Search & Rescue?
They are connected but not the same. KC AI Pet Match is a separate matching platform powered by KC Pet Search & Rescue, which provides hands-on pet recovery services in the Kansas City metro.
